2018 MMA Fighter of the Year

Champ, Champ.  Double Champ.  The one and only Daniel Cormier has been named the MMA Fighter of the Year by ESPN.  He is the obvious choice, of course.  “DC” was busy throughout the year with racking up a 3-0 record, and was able to not only defend his Light Heavyweight title, but also gain the Heavyweight strap as well.  He did this with much more class and professionalism than Conor McGregor when he was briefly a double title holder.

Cormier’s accomplishments surely make him one of the UFC greats of all time and a future Hall-of-Famer.  His focus has also been on increasing his brand and out-of-the-octagon career prospects.  He has excelled in those areas too.  Commentator experience at live UFC events as well as time spent behind the desk as a Fox UFC analyst will surely pad his resume and secure his financial future post-UFC.  These efforts outside of fighting are an excellent example for young MMA fighters who usually fail to secure their future before their careers (and brain function) start to decline.

What he has not accomplished, and what he has readily admitted is a win over Jon Jones.  His primary nemesis in not only the fight-game, but also in the world of social media.  These two do not like each other; and, it is genuine.  Will there be a third meeting of these two in the octagon?  We can only hope.  It would be a huge payday for the UFC and the two fighters.

On the other side of the coin, would another lose to Jones tarnish Cormier’s career accomplishments and legacy?  Maybe.  But, a win would be huge for Cormier and help cement him as one of the all-time greats.

We’ll have to wait and see what the future holds.  Cormier’s current plan seems to be a continued push towards a fight with Brock Lesnar and then retirement.  Perhaps the UFC can convince him otherwise.  However, with other revenue streams fully developed, why should he?

Regardless, congratulations to Cormier for another 2018 accomplishment.
