I wanted to share something that I am quite proud to discuss.  At the end of May 2016 I happened into a ketogenic diet.  I say that because I didn’t really plan to go on a diet.  Over the last couple of years I have become an avid listener of Joe Rogan’s podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, and The Fighter and the Kid Podcast with former MMA fighter Brendan Schaub and comedian/actor Bryan Callen.  In the last year there had been a few mentions of keto in some of their discussions as I would listen to their podcasts to and from work.  Tim Ferriss, author of The Four Hour Work Week, has also interviewed various nutritionists and researchers concerning the diet as well.  The talk and praise of its effectiveness in increasing energy, cognitive function, and fat-loss peaked my interest.  So, I decided to give it a half-hearted try.  Boy was I in for a surprise.  The diet is powerful and extremely effective.  My half-hearted attempt quickly became an obsession when I started literally shedding the body fat.  Take a look below for some solid evidence…

The picture on the right was taken in 2012 when I was at my heaviest…around 185.  The picture on my left is post-keto diet on my 45th birthday this year (2/24).  I’m at 146.  At the time of my start into the keto diet-world I was 179 (5/2016), and after the first 6 weeks had already lost about 20 pounds.  I confirmed my ketosis in a routine urinalysis for my annual check-up in June.  My ketone level was ‘abnormally high,’ and was an additional marker that reinforced that the diet was indeed working as planned.

It wasn’t all good news, however.  The lipids panel that I routinely get (about every three months) showed a drastic increase in my LDL “bad” cholesterol.  It had skyrocketed due to the high fat diet.  I won’t bore you with the complete details, but I can say that my discipline in changing my diet for weight loss was also put to the test in changing it to drop my overall and LDL cholesterol levels.  After three months they returned to better-than-before (normal) levels; crisis averted.  My doc had prescribed a statin, but I was determined to normalize my cholesterol levels without medication.  So far, so good.

So, what’s my purpose in discussing this…only to share my success.  I’m a firm believer in the benefits of low-carb diets in general, and the ketogenic diet in particular.  I’d be happy to chat with anyone who would like more information.  A handy resource that comes highly recommended: The Complete Ketogenic Diet for Beginners: Your Essential Guide to Living the Keto Lifestyle. There are many other resources, but that one is a good place to start.  I plan to post more about this as there are quite a few tips and tricks that I picked up along the way.  Until then…
